A homeowner called The Roof Whisperer about a skylight leak. During our roof inspection, however, we also found another problem. The chimney had no flashing at all. Instead, it only relied on cracked caulking, which let water seep in where the shingles touched the bricks. Unfortunately, the contractor who rebuilt the chimney skipped the flashing and used caulking as a shortcut.

The Repair Process

First, our roofing specialist Klevis removed the shingles around the chimney. Next, he installed an ice and water shieldto protect the area and sealed the membrane tightly where it met the brick. Then, he placed step flashing and laid new shingles over it. After that, he installed counter flashing directly into the mortar joints. Finally, he added front and back pans to complete the system.

The Result

Because of these steps, the roof now has a watertight chimney flashing system and a new skylight. As a result, the homeowner gained peace of mind knowing that future leaks and water damage are prevented.
