Curb Mounted Skylights
Curb-mounted skylights are the most common skylight type. This design requires a box structure for the unit to sit on. The skylight is designed to sit over the curb like a lid on a shoe box. One of the benefits of this design is the ability to replace older skylights without having to re-flash the skylight at the same time. This can greatly reduce the amount of labor required. Another benefit is the ease of manufacturing custom sizes. The downside is the higher profile created by the curb and the decreased energy efficiency, as most existing curbs are not insulated beyond the 1 ½” thickness of the curb itself.

Deck Mounted Skylights
Deck-mounted skylights are a more recent design that lowers the profile of the unit and increases the energy efficiency by ‘hugging’ the roof. In this design, the curb is the skylight itself. Higher quality manufacturers, such as Velux, have perfected the art over the last several decades by producing integral flashing kits for various sizes and roofing types. The lower profile provides a better visual appeal, inside and out, and the increased energy efficiency provides a more comfortable living space and peace of mind. Deck-mounted skylights are the choice for new construction or for installing new skylights in existing homes.

Custom Fixed Curb Mounted Skylights
Time to time we come across situations where fitting a skylight with standard measurements is a challenge. Velux has made it easier for us installers to keep the interior of the opening the same, but fit perfectly with perfect measurements on the outside. Custom-size skylight takes a few weeks for delivery but are perfect solution when it comes to saving money but not making any interior changes.

What should you expect during a consultation?
During your consultation, the installer will evaluate the intended skylight location. They will provide guidance on appropriate skylight dimensions, and quantity recommendations for the space, and determine the most suitable installation method (such as deck-mounted or curb-mounted systems). Additionally, they can guide you through various blind options to enhance your skylight’s appearance.
What should you expect during installation?
Skylight installation involves two main stages: exterior roof work and interior finishing. Installation duration varies from half a day to three days, depending on factors like roof angle, light shaft configuration, and weather conditions. The roof phase includes creating the opening and securing the skylight with VELUX’s triple-layer water protection system.
The interior installation typically requires about half a day per skylight, involving drywall work and painting (unless utilizing an Instant Light Shaft). Installers take precautions to shield your home’s interior from construction debris. They typically install plastic barriers around the ceiling opening to contain dust during installation.
What if I have a flat ceiling?
Flat ceiling installations require more extensive drywall work compared to vaulted ceilings. For flat ceilings, your installer will construct a drywall shaft connecting the skylight to channel natural light into the space. The installer will ensure the light shaft’s paint matches your existing ceiling color.

We do perform full assessments free of charge for any leaky skylight. For any new skylight or sun tunnel installations we apply a fee of $98.00+HST for the assessment. The fee will be reimbursed if you wish to hire our company for the project.
Q4. What brand or manufacturer do you suggest or install?
We only install skylights made from VELUX! We believe Velux skylights are the best products out there.
Q5. Do you warranty your workmanship?
Yes we do, 90 days on all temporary repairs, 5 years on replacements and installations on existing roofs and 10 years with any roof replacements.
Q6. Can the skylight glass pane be replaced only if it is cracked?
We may only be able to replace glass panes on commercial skylights. When it comes to residential use skylights No. The whole skylight needs to be replaced. Manufacturers nowadays do not sell glass panes as spare parts.
