• Curling or lifting shingles
This is one of the earliest and most visible signs of roof deterioration. Shingles begin to curl or lift due to age, repeated heat exposure, poor attic ventilation, or improper installation. When this happens, the adhesive seal that keeps shingles flat and watertight starts to fail. As a result, wind can get underneath and lift them further, while rainwater can be driven beneath the surface. Over time, this leads to hidden moisture buildup, rotting wood decking, and even insulation damage inside your attic.
• Missing or cracked sections
Missing, broken, or brittle shingles leave your roof system exposed. These gaps allow direct water penetration into the underlayment and roof deck. In Ontario’s climate, especially with freeze-thaw cycles, water can seep in, freeze, expand, and worsen the damage. What may start as a small exposed area can quickly spread, leading to widespread leaks, mold growth, and costly structural repairs if not addressed early.
• Granules collecting in gutters
The granules on asphalt shingles act as a protective layer against UV rays and weathering. As shingles age, these granules begin to loosen and wash away into your gutters and downspouts. This is often a clear indicator that your shingles are nearing the end of their lifespan. Without this protective layer, shingles become brittle, dry out faster, and are far more susceptible to cracking, warping, and water intrusion.
• Dark streaks or moss buildup
Black streaks are typically caused by algae, while green patches indicate moss growth, both common in shaded or moisture-prone areas. These organisms retain moisture against the roof surface, preventing shingles from drying properly. Over time, this constant moisture exposure accelerates deterioration, weakens the shingle structure, and can even cause them to lift or separate. Moss, in particular, can grow beneath shingles, physically pushing them up and creating direct pathways for water to enter.
• Interior leaks or ceiling stains
If you’re seeing water stains, bubbling paint, or discoloration on your ceilings or walls, the issue has likely been present for some time. Roof leaks rarely travel in a straight line—water can move along rafters, insulation, and structural components before becoming visible inside your home. By the time you notice these signs, there may already be damage to insulation, drywall, and even hidden mold growth developing behind surfaces.
